The best in its category. We highly recommend it. October 1, I settled on this keyboard as my main keyboard mostly for its gaming feel but is also well suited for everyday use. The keys are short and crisp in use even for a rubber dome keyboard.
This lets the overall height of the keyboard remain a little lower profile. There is nothing more to the standard layout except the addition of the 6 programmable macro keys lined on the left most portion of the keyboard. There is also a macro bank select button above those that has 3 sets for a total of 18 macros available. The Microsoft software that comes with the keyboard available on their website as well is very configurable and is fairly easy to use. Odd choice but I guess they wanted to show this is good for productivity as well.
The multimedia keys natively work with Windows Media Player this is a Microsoft product after all and I was successful at having other entertainment suites like VLC and Winamp work out of the box as well.
The backlighting is in a theme of red and has 3 intesity settings-off, low, and high. I find leaving it on high preferable but the options are a nice touch.
Now for the possible downsides for those who look for the following features. If you like usb ports built in to your keyboard, the X4 does not have them. This is not a huge issue in my opinion because in my case, and most other gamers or system builders, there are usb ports on pretty much everything else like fronts of the case, monitors or just on separate hub peripherals. Another possible con for some is the non removable palm rest. The palm rest is not smooth, rather, it has a small checkered pattern grooved into it.
It provides a little surface tension but it is not distracting. Also, those who like more height in the back of their keyboards from the pop down feet may think this comes up short with the X4. They only add about a half an inch of vertical lift. The surface is by no means a fingerprint magnet but it does have a semi gloss surface.
I like this keyboard for my primary keyboard for many reasons that suit me. It is hard to describe the feel of this keyboard in a written review but if I were to use one word, it would be crisp. It has no play in construction, the keys press and rebound quickly and accurately, and the macro setup is painless in our out of the game. We particularly like the extra-wide spacebar, which ensures that reaching that all-important jump key is never a stretch. We took issue with the wrist rest. Although pleasantly textured, it's too shallow to provide any support and, with your fingers resting on the W, A, S and D keys, your hand is likely to arch over the wrist rest entirely, making it fairly useless.
We wouldn't recommend prolonged gaming sessions with the X4 without the use of an additional wrist support. Macro-oni and keys The X4 has six macro keys, each of which can store three macros, allowing you to program 18 macros in total. A key at the top of the X4 allows you cycle through each bank of six macros. On-the-fly macro programming is simple enough -- hit the record key, then the macro key you wish to assign the macro to, and finally plug in the keys you want recorded.
The macro keys themselves are slightly out of finger reach, which is rather inconvenient if you're playing a game in which every second counts. Although the keyboard will work as soon as you plug it into your computer 's USB port, installing the included software lets you tinker with more advanced settings. You can customise the media keys; programme macro banks to automatically associate with certain programs, so you won't have to remember which macro banks you've assigned to your favourite games; and set up macro repeating, so that macros continually repeat until you stop them.
The keyboard input time is around 2 milliseconds, which is pretty darned swift. That kind of speed is vital if you're playing a game which relies on lightning-fast twitch skills. Ghosting buster The much-touted anti-ghosting technology eliminates a problem suffered by many keyboards -- press too many keys at once and additional key presses fail to register.
The X4 allows for up to 26 simultaneous inputs, so you can bash out some fiendishly complex button combinations. The X4's predecessor, the SideWinder X6 , had huge ghosting problems, so it's good to see Microsoft listening to user feedback. Anti-ghosting capability isn't something that everyone will find useful, but the feature could prove invaluable for some. Conclusion The Microsoft SideWinder X4 is a decent piece of gaming kit that does effective double duty as an everyday keyboard.
It's expensive for a device that lacks the advanced features you might find in other gaming keyboards, and the uncomfortable wrist rest is a definite downside.
