Computer Icon Vector. Turn Off Computer Icon. Shortcut Keys Icon. White Computer Icons Desktop. This is a "feature" of the Windows 7 desktop cleanup option. I see this mostly for network shortcuts when a laptop has been off of the network.
The system will see that there is not connectivity for the shortcut and delete it because it thinks its a dead shortcut. I know there are other discussions here for turning this "feature" off but I have never done that. This is almost always a video card hardware error.
Try swapping for a known good card to test. If the unit is using an add in card, but has integrated video as well, take the expansion card out and use the integrated card to test. They actually are all network shortcuts. Im guessing if I add them in a "new folder" they should be ok there. I dont want to turn off the system maintenance. I will also try a Malwarebytes scan and Spybot just to rule that out as well. You could do a hard disk scan and make sure there are no file allocation errors or bad sectors on the hard disk - bad indexes on hard disks can cause strange issues like files disappearing or not saving correctly.
Sorry to Aaron - but I would NOT think it likely to be a video card issue, the fault is too specific With regards to why only some disappear, are the ones that are disappearing created on the local profile and the ones that stay part of the "all users" profile?
If this is the case it might indicate a virus or malware that can only access the local profile. I would hope that all users are running a limited user account, that way generally a virus can only infect the local account and will not gain admin privileges.
The most common manifestation of video card failure is the system tray icons disappearing But you missed my standpoint. Please feel free to email me any answers, The unit is in our California office, so I'm unable to get a clear picture, but my tech out there untrained, but knows enought to do the job attempted to log on using any member of the domain, and locally, the results were the same, no icons.
